No Magic Formula in Poker

At a poker table, one can notice a different poker player who often folds. But in the end, this particular player is the one who made the most gain. Then, in the next poker session, this same poker player would bet even when the pot is small. Again, at the end of the session, this player was able to accumulate his small wins into a significant total amount. How did this player know exactly what to do? Is there a magic formula that he applies in each poker game?

For most players, poker is analogous to life. There will winning streaks and losing streaks that are similar to the ups and downs of life. There will be bad beats that reflect unexpected disappointments in life. And there will be winnings that were achieved because of three things: careful planning, patience, and knowledge. These same three things are also needed in achieving one's accomplishments.

Life, however, cannot be controlled by following one specified and fixed formula. The same thing applies in poker. There is no magic formula in poker. Imagine what will happen if there is indeed one magic formula

With one magic formula, there will be a set of responses that will be used for several various situations. These responses are fixed and foreordained. That is, in situation A, the poker player must use response #1; in situation B, he poker player must use response #2; in situation C, there is response #3; and so on. Some players may think this as attractive because one already knew what to do for every situation. But it takes away the challenge of the game.

With one magic formula, all that a poker player had to do is memorize the situations and the corresponding responses. The game of poker, as a result, has been reduced to one question-and-answer activity. The need to think with discipline and patience is no longer valuable. The ability to discern when a high card is not worth raising and when a draw card has the best chances of winning, is no longer important. And the need to win the highest profits after the game cannot be satisfied.

With one magic formula used by all poker players at the table, the money will just go from one player to another. And on the average, each poker player will be holding the same amount of chips and money that were used in the beginning. In the end, with the insatiable need of humans to look for change and excitement, poker will no longer be sought by players and this game may even be forgotten, along with other aspects of history.
