Poker Profiles: Chris Karagulleyan
Chris Karagulleyan moved to the West Coast in early 80's to elude the effects of the civil war. His family did not know for sure what to expect from a foreign land. Good thing, America was good to them, providing shelter and an avenue where Chris could show off his Poker skills that was first discovered back in Beirut, Lebanon.
Karagulleyan started playing Poker about the same time that the war erupted. The casino is the most interesting place to be at that time to wile away time and forget about the crisis. Once in Los Angeles, Karagulleyan did not think twice about joining Poker games with his fellow high schoolers. When he found out that he could earn decent money from it, he being serious about winning. Karagulleyan's seriousness at the Poker table earned him two World Poker Tour titles, no less. His wealth is also mostly from casino money. Unlike many Poker professionals, Karagulleyan thinks that enough discipline could get him farther than Mathematical skills could. Knowing that there is so much in store for any winner is the thing that keeps him focused every game.
Karagulleyan love sitting with newbies, teaching them a lesson or two at winning and taking their bets in the long run. His skills are honed by watching other players treat their games. He try to learn from their breaks and mistakes, making sure that he only maintains the good stuff when it is his time to sit at the table.
If his Poker skill is impressive enough, wait until you learn that Karagulleyan previously worked as a cab driver. He also held jobs baking breads and whatnots. All these cannot be traced in his very formal demeanor. Often, Karagulleyan can be caught playing in his suit, with a tie and an air of confidence left unmatched. He is serious about business but is able to keep his cool whether he is wiining big time or is down in the dumps.
Karagulleyan is mostly excellent in No Limit Hold'ems. He learned well enough how crack up, tie, and trap his opponents so he can proceed to the jackpot. But Karagulleyan is no selfish player. He shares his knowledge with everyone, often found tutoring friends at the Poker table. He is more comfortable coaching nowadays than playing rigorous games.
Playing cannot be shaken off, however. Karagulleyan still shows up sometimes, to tell everyone that he is indeed one good Poker professional who can beat other guys to draw a good stash of cash.
